Charles Holzer: Honoring My Friend Dan Cogan at the Bronx Public Defenders Gala

I recently had the privilege of attending the Bronx Public Defenders Annual Gala at Cipriani in New York City. The evening was a celebration of those working to make our world a more just and equitable place, and I was there to honor my dear friend Dan Cogan, who was recognized alongside his wife, Liz Garbus.

Dan and I share a bond that goes back to our high school days and continued as college roommates. Over the years, I’ve watched him grow into a force for change through his groundbreaking work in documentary filmmaking. His films have not only garnered prestigious accolades, including an Academy Award, but also highlighted critical social issues, inspiring action and awareness worldwide.

Over the years, I’ve watched him accomplish so much, and I can honestly say, “Dan makes such a great difference in our world.” It was an honor to be there for him and Liz, to show my appreciation and support for all they’ve done.

The gala itself was an inspiring event. It highlighted the transformative work of the Bronx Public Defenders, whose mission goes beyond the courtroom to address the root causes of injustice. Seeing Dan celebrated for his dedication to these efforts made the evening even more meaningful.

Being part of such an event reminded me of the importance of standing by friends and supporting causes that matter. Dan’s contributions—and those of everyone honored that night—serve as a powerful example of how we can all work toward a better future.
